Description of the Vietnam Medical Mission

Temple University School of Pharmacy (TUSP) puts great emphasis on the importance of global health recognition.  Faculty and students will be traveling to Vietnam to work with the most under-served community in Southern Vietnam.

Temple University will join tasks with Mercer University School of Engineering (Macon, Georgia) to work at local medical clinics and hospitals in Saigon, Can Tho, Dong Thap, and Vung Tau Vietnam.

Currently, more than 100,000 people in Vietnam are amputated due to silent land mines, infections, and diabetic complications.  Mercer University will bring approximately 150 universal socket prosthetics to distribute to amputees who are unable to obtain prosthetics due to financial burden.  Along with the fitting of the prosthetics, Medical and Pharmacy faculty and students will hold clinics to provide free examinations for patients who have orthopedic illnesses.

Temple Pharmacy faculty and students will distribute medications and counsel patients on chronic illness such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.  They will also perform blood glucose testing, blood pressure monitoring, and administer injectable medications at the clinic.

Lastly, faculty and students will visit local nursing homes, orphanages and vocational rehabilitation centers.  They will visit the residents, learn about their daily activities, and donate food, medication, and supplies to these centers.
